  THE LAST LESSON By Alphonse Daudet (13 May 1840 - 16 December 1897) Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) was a French writer known for his realistic and often autobiographical works. He started his career as a journalist before publishing his first collection of short stories, "Lettres de mon moulin" (Letters from My Windmill), which became a critical and popular success. His other notable works include "Tartarin de Tarascon," a humorous novel, and "Le Petit Chose," a semi-autobiographical novel about his childhood. Daudet also wrote plays and poetry and was a member of the Académie Goncourt. Despite suffering from syphilis and losing his hearing later in life, he continued to write until he died in 1897.
