Regular and Irregular Verbs (List of Irregular verbs)

REGULAR & IRREGULAR VERBS

VERBS

What are verbs?

Verbs are Known as action words. They tell us what someone or something is doing.

Examples:

He is running. (Here run is a verb)

She sings beautifully. (Here sing is a verb)

Regular verbs: Most verbs in English are regular verbs. These verbs follow a simple rule to change their form. To make past and past participles, we just add "-ed" or "-d" to the verb

Examples

  • Play becomes played.

  • Walk becomes walked.

  • Listen becomes listened.

Irregular verbs: On the other hand, Irregular verbs are special as they do not follow the normal patterns for past and past participle. In other words, they don’t add "-ed" or "-d" to form past and past participle. Instead, they change in different ways, and there’s no single rule that applies to all of them.

Examples

  1. Go:

    • Present: go (I go to school.)

    • Past: went (Yesterday, I went to school.)

    • Past Participle: gone (He  has gone to school.)

Here, "go" changes to "went" in the past, and to "gone" when used in the perfect tense.

  1. Eat:

    • Present: eat (I eat an apple.)

    • Past: ate (I ate an apple yesterday.)

    • Past Participle: eaten (I have eaten an apple today.)

Here, "eat" changes to "ate" in the past, and to "eaten" when used in the perfect tense.

  1. Sing:

    • Present: sing (She sings well.)

    • Past: sang (She sang yesterday.)

    • Past Participle: sung (She has sung at the concert.)

Here"sing" becomes "sang" in the past and "sung" when used with "have" or "has."

Why Are Irregular Verbs Important?

Irregular verbs are important because they are very common in English. Knowing how to use them correctly will help one speak and write more accurately.

Conclusion:

In a nutshell, irregular verbs don’t follow the normal rules for forming the past and past participle. They change in their own unique ways. So there is a need to learn them separately. But with practice, they’ll become easier to use.
