Right at the start it is imperative to disclose a matter of vital importance about the tiger…… … in other words, the Tiger King is dead.

  • The author expresses that if anyone reads the story of the tiger king he or she would like to meet him. But his wish cannot be fulfilled. At this point, the author gives reference to an episode from the Ramayana. On reaching Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, Lord Rama expressed his desire to meet his father King Dasratha. But his wish could not be fulfilled as King Dashrath was no more. In the same way, the Tiger King is dead and, therefore, the wish to meet him cannot be fulfilled.

Q. What would a reader desire after knowing about the Tiger King?

Ans. Lord Rama expressed his wish to meet his father King Dasratha, but his wish could not be fulfilled because he was dead.

The manner of his death is a matter of extraordinary interest …… .. the royal infant uttered these words in his little squeaky voice.

  • The author expresses that the manner of the Tiger King's death is a matter of much interest which will be revealed in the end.

  • According to the author when the Tiger King was born, the astrologers predicted that he would become the hero of heroes, champion of champions, and warrior of warriors. Thereafter, they started biting their lips and when they were forced, they told that the child who was born under that star would have to meet his death.

  • At this juncture, a miracle took place. The Tiger King who was barely ten days old started speaking. He addressed the astrologers saying," O wise prophets!" Nobody could believe that just a ten-day-old child could speak.

  • The infant king remarked anybody who is born has to die. So there was no need for any prediction in it. Moreover, he asked the astrologers to tell him the manner of his death.

Q. What did the astrologers predict about the Tiger King?

Ans. The astrologers predicted that the Tiger King would grow up to become the warrior of warriors, hero of heroes and champion of champions. Further, when compelled they told him that one day he would die.

Q. Why did the astrologers begin to bite their lips?

Ans. The astrologers hesitated to tell the truth about the Tiger King that one day he would die.

Q. What was the miracle that took place?

Ans. The Tiger King was only 10 days old and he started speaking and even asked some intelligent questions

Q. How did the infant King react when the astrologer said one day he would die?

Ans. The Tiger King remarked that there was no need for any prediction about his death. Anybody who has come to this world must die one day. Moreover, he asked the astrologers to tell him the manner of his death.

The chief astrologer placed his finger on his nose in…… .. we may conclude it was based on some truth.

  • The chief astrologer was quite surprised when he heard the squeaky voice of the Tiger King who was just 10 days old, and was asking intelligent questions. It was unbelievable. It appeared to him just like bulletins issued by the war office.

  • The chief astrologer explained that the Tiger King was born in the hour of the bull, and therefore, his death would be caused by a tiger. It was because there was a kind of enmity between bull and tiger.

  • According to the author the Tiger King was not least afraid when he heard the word tiger.  Instead, the Tiger King challenged the tigers saying "Let the tigers beware!"

  • In the kingdom of Pratibandapuram, this account was a rumour rife. But whatever happened later on shows that there was some truth in the happening.

Q. What did the chief astrologer explain about the Tiger King?

Ans. The Tiger King was born in the hour of the bull, and there was a rivalry between the tiger and the bull. Therefore, his death would be caused by a tiger.

Q.  How did the Tiger King react when he heard the word tigers?

Ans. The infant king was not least afraid after hearing the word tiger. Instead of shivering with fear, he challenged the tigers saying "Let the tigers beware!"

Q. What was incredible for the chief astrologer?

Ans. A boy who was just 10 days old was not only speaking but also asking some very intelligent questions.

Crown Prince Jung Jung Bahadur grew taller and stronger….. the Court of Wards until then came into his hands.

  • The crown Prince  Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur was growing taller and stronger day by day. He used to drink the milk of an English cow; he was taken care of by an English nanny; and he was taught by an Englishman in English. Moreover, he used to watch only English movies like other princes of India.

  • When the Tiger King turned twenty, he was crowned as the king of Pratibandapuram.

Q. How was the Tiger King brought up?

Ans. The Tiger King was brought up in an English environment. He used to drink only the milk of an English cow, was taken care of by an English Nanny, and was taught in English by an English man. He used to watch only English movies.

Q. At what age was the Tiger King crowned?

Ans. At the age of 20

Q. Who looked after the kingdom when the Tiger King was a minor?

Ans. Court of wards.

But everyone in the kingdom remembered the astrologer's prediction… … finished on an incoherent note.

  • Whatever happened when the Tiger King was an infant, was known to all in the kingdom. Very soon the Tiger King also got to know that the chief astrologer had predicted that his death would be caused by a tiger.

  • The Tiger King decided to shoot a tiger to prove the prediction of the chief astrologer wrong. He thought in self-defence a person could kill even a cow. Therefore, there was no harm in killing a tiger. The statement that a person could even kill a cow in self-defence is applicable when a person is face to face with danger. But there was no such danger to the Tiger King. His decision to shoot the tiger was nothing but the eccentricity of a king.

  • After killing the first tiger, the Tiger King called the chief astrologer to make fun of him. The chief astrologer played very smartly. He explained that there was no danger to the king's life until he attempted to kill the hundredth tiger.

  • The Tiger King asked the chief astrologer what if he killed a hundred tigers. Listening to this, the chief astrologer said that if it happened he would cut his tuft, tear his books on astrology and set them on fire and also he would become an insurance agent.

Q. Why did the Tiger King decide to shoot a tiger?

Ans. The Tiger King wanted to prove the prediction of the chief astrologer wrong and to make fun of him.

Q. How did the Tiger King justify the shooting of the first tiger?

Ans. The Tiger King thought if even a sacred animal like a cow could be killed in self-defence, then there was no harm in killing a tiger.

Q. How did the chief astrologer save his skin?

Ans. The chief astrologer said that the Tiger King could kill 99 tigers and nothing would happen. But he warned that the king must not try to kill the hundredth tiger because there was a danger to his life.

From that day onwards it was celebration time for all the Tigers inhabiting Pratibandapuram………….. Initially, the king seemed well set to realise his ambition

  • Here we notice a satirical remark. According to the author, since the day the Tiger King decided to shoot a hundred tigers, there was a celebration time for the tigers. Tiger hunting had been banned in the forests of Pratibandapuram. An announcement was made that if anybody tried to throw even a stone at the tigers, his property would be seized /confiscated. On the other hand, the king set out to shoot the tigers.

  • The tiger king vowed that he would not do any other work till he did not complete his mission of killing a hundred tigers. A king has to look after the state affairs and this very king decided he would not do anything except kill tigers.

Q. How did the celebration time for the tigers start?

Ans. In the forests of Pratibandapuram tiger hunting had been banned by everyone barring the king.

Q. What was the proclamation?

Ans. The proclamation was that if anybody was found even throwing a stone at the tigers, all his property would be confiscated.

Q. What did the Tiger King vow?

Ans. He would not take up any work or he would not look after the affairs of the state till he did not complete his mission of killing a hundred tigers.

Q. Which ambition has been referred to here?

Ans. Shooting a hundred tigers.

Q. What is the irony here?

Ans. On the one hand, tiger hunting had been banned in the forests of Pratibandapuram. On the other hand, the Tiger King started killing one tiger after another, and as a result, the forests of Pratibandapuram became dry of the tigers.

Not that he faced no dangers there were times when the bullet missed its mark …………… But tiger hunt! That’s impossible!’’

  • According to the author the Tiger King had to face some danger also while he was hunting for the tigers. Sometimes the gun fell and he fought empty-handed. But each time it was the king who was victorious.

  • Once a high-ranking British officer visited  Pratibandapuram. He was fond of hunting tigers. He loved to be photographed with the dead body of the tigers under his feet and gun in his hand. Therefore he sent a request to the Tiger King to allow him to hunt the tigers. But the king did not allow him. The king sent a message that he could arrange any other hunt like boar hunt or mouse hunt, or even mosquito hunt but tiger hunting was not possible.

Q. What were the dangers that the Tiger King faced in his mission of killing a hundred tigers?

Ans. Sometimes his life was in danger when the gun fell and he had to fight empty-handed but still, he was victorious. On one occasion he was on the verge of losing his kingdom.

Q. What did the high-ranking British official want to do in Pratibandapuram?

Ans. He wanted to shoot tigers in the forests of Pratibandapuram

Q. What was the high-ranking British official fonder of?

Ans. He was fonder of getting photographed with the dead body of the tiger.

Q. Why did the Tiger King refuse to allow the high-ranking British officer to shoot tigers in the forests of  Pratibandapuram?

Ans. The Tiger King wanted to preserve the tigers for himself only.

The British officer's Secretary sent word to the Maharaja through Diwan that the durai himself did not have to kill the tiger…………… The Maharaja was happy that though he had lost three lakh of rupees, he had managed to retain his kingdom.

  • When the British officer was not allowed to hunt he sent a message through his Secretary that hunting would be done by the king but he should be allowed to have a photograph with the dead body of the tiger under his feet and gun in his hand. Still, the Tiger King did not agree because he thought if he allowed one British officer, others would demand the same and then it would not be possible for him to complete the mission of killing a hundred tigers.

  • Thereafter, the king feared that his kingdom might be attacked by the Britishers and included in the British empire as he had not allowed a high-ranking officer to shoot in the forest of Pratibandapuram.

  • There was a long discussion between him and his dewan and finally it was decided that some special gift should be sent to the wife of the British officer. Immediately a telegram was sent to a British jeweller in Calcutta and he was asked to dispatch the best quality of diamond rings. Some fifty diamond rings arrived. All were sent to the wife of the British officer or duraisani. The king and the dewan expected that the wife of the officer would keep a few and the rest would be sent back. But she kept all and sent a letter of thanks.

  • This caused him 300000 rupees but still the king was not disturbed because he was able to save his kingdom.

Q. What was the message that the high-ranking British officer sent to the king when the latter did not allow him to shoot the tigers in the forest of Pratibandapuram?

Ans. The British officer sent a message that hunting of the tigers would be done by the king but he should just be allowed to have a photograph with the dead tiger under his feet and gun in his hand.

Q. Why did the Tiger King not allow the British officer to have the photograph with the dead body of the tiger?

Ans. The king thought if he allowed one officer, others would demand the same. In this way, his mission to shoot a hundred tigers could never be completed.

Q. What was the fear of the Tiger King after he had refused to allow the British officer to shoot?

Ans. He feared that the high-ranking British officer might attack his Kingdom and include it in the British empire.

Q. How did the Tiger King save his Kingdom from the Britishers?

Ans. He tried to appease the British officer by sending his wife the best quality diamond rings.

Q. Who were durai and duraisani?

Ans. Durai was a British officer and Duraisani was his wife.

Q. Why was the Tiger King happy even after losing 300000 rupees?

Ans. He was happy because he was able to save his Kingdom.

Q. How many rings were sent to the British officer's wife?

Ans. 50 diamond rings

Q. What did the Tiger King and his dewan expect when they sent 50 diamond rings to the duraisani?

Ans. Both the Tiger King and his dewan expected that the duraisani would keep a few rings and the rest would be returned.

Q. What did durasani do after receiving 50 diamond rings?

Ans. She kept all and just sent a letter of thanks.

The Maharaj's tiger hunts continued to be highly successful. Within 10 years he was able to kill 70 tigers…………. Or simply ran away from the State because they desired to be shot by British hands alone?

  • The Maharaja of Pratibandapuram continued to shoot tigers for 10 years and during this period he killed 70 tigers. Thereafter a hurdle came. No tiger was left in the forests of  Pratibandapuram.

  • According to the author, there were no tigers left in the forests of Pratibandapuram because either the tigers practised birth control or they committed suicide or they ran away from the forests of Pratibandapuram as they wanted to be hunted by the Britishers.

Q. How many tigers did the king hunt or shoot during 10 years?

Ans. 70 tigers

Q. What was the unforeseen hurdle that the Tiger King had to face?

Ans. No tiger was left in the forests of Pratibandapuram.

Q. Why did the tiger population become extinct in the forests of Pratibandapuram?

Ans. The Tiger King had been shooting the tigers for 10 years and therefore, no tiger was left.

Q. What is the explanation given by the author about the extinction of tigers from the forests of Pratibandapuram?

Ans. According to the author, there were no tigers left in the forests of Pratibandapuram because they adopted birth control methods or committed suicide or ran away from Pratibandapuram as they wanted to be shot dead by the Britishers.

One day the Maharaja sent for the dewan. “Dewan Saheb, aren't you aware of the fact that thirty tigers still remain to be shot down by this gun of mine…………. He found the right girl from a state which possessed a large number of tigers.

  • The Tiger King was very much tense because no tiger was left in the forests of Pratibandapuram and his mission had not been completed. Therefore, one day he called his dewan and brandishing his gun said that still thirty tigers were left. Dewan got frightened and started shivering when he saw the Tiger King brandishing his gun. He told the king that he was not the tiger.

  • The Tiger King laughed and said which idiot would call him a tiger and again dewan was confused and said he was not a gun either. The Tiger King then told him he was neither a tiger nor a gun, and then said that he had decided to marry. Again dewan got perturbed and said that he already had two wives and thus he could not marry the king.

  • The King was so angry and asked him not to talk nonsense and said that all he wanted was tigers. Once again Dewan got nervous and said one tiger king was enough in the kingdom. Thus there was no need for any tiger queen. If he liked he could marry with the gun the way his ancestors used to be married with the sword.

  • Listening to the views of the dewan, the king started laughing and then he explained that neither he wanted to marry a tiger nor a gun but a girl of human rank.

  • The king explained the Dewan about his plan. He asked dewan to make a list of all those native states having large populations of tigers and then he would see if there was any girl in the royal family for marriage. Fortunately, one such kingdom was found.

  • After the marriage, the Tiger King frequently visited his father-in-law's kingdom and used to kill five or six tigers each time. In this way, he was able to kill 99 tigers.

Q. Why did the dewan start shivering with fear?

Ans. When the dewan found a gun in the hand of the king, he got afraid.

Q. What was the strategy of the Tiger King to complete his mission when the forest office Kingdom became dry of the tigers?

Ans. The Tiger King planned to marry a girl from a native kingdom having a large population of tigers and he was successful also.

The Maharaja's anxiety reached a fever pitch when there remained just one tiger to achieve his tally of 100……………… He could give up tiger hunting altogether.

  • After killing 99 tigers the Tiger King was extremely excited. The author has used the expression “his anxiety reached a fever pitch”. He thought that after killing one tiger he would not have any fear left. In this way, he would be safe also. This time there was no tiger left in the forests of his father-in-law's Kingdom.

Q. Why was Maharaja's anxiety at a fever pitch?

Ans. It was because only one tiger was left to complete his mission.

Q. What happened when just one tiger was left to complete the mission?

Ans. There was no tiger left either in the forests of his Kingdom or those of his father-in-law's.

But he had to be extremely careful with that last tiger. What had the late chief astrologer said?.......................... In his own state sheep began to disappear frequently from a hillside village

  • The tiger king had not forgotten the words of the chief astrologer that he should be careful about the hundredth tiger. The king thought after all tiger was a wild beast. Here the irony is that the chief astrologer was no more and still the king continued his mission. This can be just vanity and eccentricity of an authority.

  • There was just one tiger left to be shot dead and nowhere there was any tiger. The king was very sad but very soon his sadness was removed when he was informed that a tiger had started visiting a hillside village because people observed that sheep had started disappearing fast.

Q. What did the Tiger King remember about the late chief astrologer?

Ans. The Tiger King recalled the words of the chief astrologer that he should be careful about the hundredth tiger.

Q. Why did the Tiger King sink into deep gloom?

Ans. The Tiger King had already killed 99 tigers and now just one tiger was left. But he could not find a tiger anywhere. That's why he sank into deep gloom.

Q. How was the king’s gloom dispelled?

Ans. The gloom of the Tiger King was dispelled after the people of a hillside village informed him about the presence of a tiger as the sheep had started disappearing.

Q. What did the people of the inside village realise when the sheep began to disappear?

Ans. It meant that a tiger had started visiting.

It was first ascertained that this was not the work of Khader Mian Saheb or Virasami Naicker, both famed for their…………………. The Maharaja announced a three-year exemption from all taxes for that village and set out on the hunt at once.

  • The people of the hillside village knew very well that the king was in search of a tiger. Therefore, when the sheep began to disappear, they realised that a tiger was visiting. But still, they wanted to confirm because there were two people in the village, Khader Mian Saheb and Veerasami Naicker who were famous for eating the whole sheep alone. When they confirmed that it was a tiger which had been hunting the domestic animals, they informed the king. The king became so happy that he announced that no land tax would be collected from the village for three consecutive years.

Q. Who were Khader Mian Saheb and Veerasami Naicker?

Ans. Both of them were the villagers famous for eating the whole sheep alone.

Q. How were the villagers rewarded?

Ans. All The villages were exempted from land tax for three consecutive years.

The tiger was not easily found. It seemed as if it had wantonly……………….‘‘In that case you may resign from your post,’’ said the king.

  • The Tiger King was camping in the forest to shoot the hundredth tiger. He had been waiting but the tiger did not come. With every passing moment, his anger was growing. Many officers lost their jobs because the hundredth tiger was not found.

  • One day when the Tiger King was very angry. He called the dewan and asked him to announce to double the land tax. The dewan said if he did so, the people might get inclined towards the Indian National Congress. Listening to this the king remarked that he should resign then.

Q. What happened when the hundredth tiger did not appear while the Maharaja was waiting in the forest?

Ans.  Many officers lost their jobs.

Q. What did the Tiger King order the dewan?

Ans. The Tiger King was furious when he could not find the hundredth tiger. Therefore, he ordered to double the land tax.

Q. What did Dewan try to make the king realise?

Ans. The dewan said that if the king doubled the land tax, the people would become discontented and join the Indian National Congress.

The Dewan went home convinced that if the Maharaja did not find the tiger soon the result could be catastrophic………………….. in his efforts to haul the beast out of the car and push it down to the ground.

  • That evening the dewan was very much disappointed and hopeless. He thought if a tiger was not provided to the king immediately, the result would be disastrous. When he reached home he felt a bit relaxed to see the tiger in his house. The tiger had been brought from the people's park Madras and kept it hidden in his house.

  • The dewan decided to present the tiger to the king. Therefore, at midnight, he carried the tiger and left it near the spot where the king had been camping. It was not easy for him because the tiger refused to come out and he got exhausted.

Q. Why was the dewan so hopeless?

Ans. The dewan realised that the Tiger King could do anything or cross any limit if a tiger was not provided to him immediately

Q. What brought him relief?

Ans. Dewan was relieved when he saw the tiger which had been brought from the people's park Madras and kept it hidden in his house.

Q. What did the dewan decide?

Ans. Dewan decided to present the tiger to the king so that he could complete his mission.

Q. How did the tiger begin Satyagraha?

Ans. When the car reached the forest the tiger refused to come out of the car. The dewan got exhausted while dragging the tiger out of the car.

On the following day, the same old Tiger wandered into the Maharaja's presence and stood as if in humble supplication……………….  A tomb was erected over it.

  • The next day the tiger left by the dewan came in front of the Tiger King and it stood as if he was appealing to the king what the order was for him. The king took the aim and fired. The Tiger jumped and then fell crumpled. The king was so happy. He thought that the tiger was dead and therefore he asked the hunters and officers to carry the dead body of the tiger in a huge profession.

  • After the departure of the king, the hunters went near the tiger and they found that the tiger was rolling its eyes. Now there was confusion about what to do. If they informed the king, they would lose their jobs. Therefore, one of the hunters took aim from close range and fired and as a result the tiger was dead. As per the instruction of the king,  the dead body of the tiger was carried to the city in a huge procession. He was buried there respectfully and a tomb was erected where he had been buried.

Q. Describe the posture of the Tiger when it appeared in front of the king.

Ans. That tiger stood in front of the king in humble supplication as if he wanted to ask what the order was for him.

Q. What was the instruction given by the Tiger King to the officers and hunters before he had left the forest?

Ans. The Tiger King ordered his officers and hunters to carry the dead body of the tiger in a huge procession to the city.

Q. What did the officers and hunters realise when they examined the tiger?

Ans. The officers and hunters discovered that the tiger was not dead. It had fainted because it could not bear the loud sound of the rifle.

Q. What was the dilemma or confusion with the officers and the hunters?

Ans. The officers and the hunters thought if the king knew that he had not shot the tiger dead many of them might lose their jobs. Therefore, one of them shot the tiger at close range and killed it.

Q. How was the hundredth tiger honoured?

Ans. The hundred tiger’s body was carried to the city in a huge procession. He was also buried respectfully. Thereafter a tomb was also erected.

A few days later the Maharaja's son's third birthday was celebrated………………….. Let this be your offering to the crown prince on his birthday,’’ said the king and took it away with him.

  • After completing his mission of hunting a hundred tigers, the king started paying attention to family matters. It was his son's third birthday and so he decided to give him a special gift. Therefore, he went from one shopping centre to another in search of some special gift. Initially, he could not find anything suitable. Finally, he saw a wooden tiger and that fascinated him.

  • The actual price of that wooden tiger was just two annas and a quarter. But the shopkeeper thought if he quoted such a low price he might be punished under the rules of emergency. That's why he quoted the price of 300 rupees. In reply, the king said that it would be the his (shopkeeper’s) offering to the prince on his birthday.

Q. Why was the Tiger King unable to pay attention to his son?

Ans. It was because he remained busy hunting the tigers and completing his mission.

Q. Why did the Tiger King wander from one shopping centre to another?

Ans. The Tiger King wandered from one shopping centre to another to purchase a special gift for his son to give him on his birthday.

Q What was the real price of the wooden tiger?

Ans. The real price of the wooden tiger was two annas and a quarter.

Q. How much did the shopkeeper quote for the wooden tiger?

Ans. The shopkeeper quoted 300 rupees.

Q. Why did the shopkeeper quote 300 rupees for the wooden tiger?

Ans. The shopkeeper feared that he might be punished under the rules of emergency if we quoted the real price.

Q. How much did the king pay for the wooden tiger?

Ans. The king did not pay even a penny for the wooden tiger. He told the shopkeeper that the wooden tiger would be his birthday gift to the crown prince.

On that day father and son played with that tiny little wooden tiger. It had been carved by an unskilled carpenter………………… In this manner, the hundredth tiger took its final revenge upon the Tiger King.

  • The Tiger King wanted to give full attention to his son. That's why he started playing with the wooden tiger. The wooden tiger had not been carved by any skilled carpenter. That's why there were a lot of slivers on its surface.

  • One of the slivers pierced into the right hand of the Tiger King. He pulled it out and continued to play. As he had been somewhat careless, infection flared. In a few days, it turned into a pus-forming wound. When the condition became critical, three best surgeons were brought from Madras. All three consulted among themselves and decided to operate. After the surgery was finished they came out and told the operation was successful but the king was dead.

  • Here we come across the biggest irony. The Tiger King continued to shoot one tiger after another and nothing happened. Finally, a wooden tiger took his life. We can also say that the wooden tiger took revenge on all those hundred tigers who were killed because of the king.

Q. Who had made the wooden tiger?

Ans. The wooden tiger was carved by some unskilled carpenter.

Q. Why were there so many slivers on the surface of the wooden tiger?

Ans. As it had been carved by an unskilled carpenter, there were a lot of slivers on the surface of the wooden tiger.

Q. How did the tiger king die?

Ans. While the Tiger King was playing with the wooden tiger, a sliver pierced into his right hand. As the king had been careless, infection flared and then it turned into a suppurating wound. Although he had been operated on,  he could not survive.

Q. Who took the revenge of a hundred tigers from the tiger king?

Ans. Wooden tiger

Q. What is the irony here?

Ans. A wooden tiger took revenge.

The Last Lesson by Alphonse Daudet, class 12 English CBSE ( Summary, explanation, question-answer, word meaning and literary devices)

THE LAST LESSON By Alphonse Daudet (13 May 1840 - 16 December 1897) Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) was a French writer known for his realistic and often autobiographical works. He started his career as a journalist before publishing his first collection of short stories, "Lettres de mon moulin" (Letters from My Windmill), which became a critical and popular success. His other notable works include "Tartarin de Tarascon," a humorous novel, and "Le Petit Chose," a semi-autobiographical novel about his childhood.
